Welcome to study Finnish language with us! We offer various Finnish courses for different skill levels, both onsite in different locations around the city and online. Below you will find information about upcoming courses and registration.

This autumn we offer 37 Finnish courses to choose from. In the list below, you’ll find our onsite courses first, followed by our online courses.

We organize Finnish courses from beginner’s level A1 to level C1, in five locations as well as online. Our courses are open to everyone, but students need to register in advance for most of the courses. We do not provide language testing, but certificates of attendance are provided on request (see below for more information).

Registration
Note! You must register for our Finnish courses in advance, either online or by phone.
How to register?
• Online registration starts on June 11th, 2026 at 10 am for most courses.
• Registration by phone at 044 553 8400 from Monday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm, starting on June 11th, 2026.
If you register by phone, be prepared to give us your email address, to which we will send confirmation of your registration and the payment details for paying the course fee.
Note that your registration is binding; if you know you can’t attend the course, cancel your registration at least 8 days before the course begins (free of charge). For cancellations 1-7 days before the beginning of the course we charge the whole course fee.

Certificate of participation
A student can request a certificate of participation for their studies (from 2007 onwards).
During the participation year, the fee for the certificate is 10 € when collected from the office or sent by email, and 15 € for certificates from previous years as well as for certificates in English (when sent by post to your home: 13 €/18 €). You can order the certificate from Ahjola’s office by email at toimisto@ahjola.fi.
Students of Finnish language courses are offered a free certificate for A-level courses (levels 0–A2.2). The student must request the certificate from the office themselves. For B- and C-level courses, the student pays for the certificate according to the price list above.
Note! A certificate cannot be issued if the student has not participated in the course.

The course is suitable for you if you have already studied the entire textbook Suomen mestari 1 and want to revise what you’ve learned before moving to the next level. During the course, we will review the structures and vocabulary of Suomen mestari 1 textbook in a practical and varied way through different kinds of exercises. The language of instruction is Finnish. English and Russian are used as auxiliary languages in teaching when necessary.

On this course, we will activate and maintain Finnish speaking and listening skills related to everyday life topics. We will also expand vocabulary, and refine grammar structures. The textbook of the course is Elämänmenoa. We will cover texts 18-34 from the book. The language of instruction is Finnish.

We will also explore the differences between spoken and written Finnish, with a particular focus on vocabulary.

The aim of this course is to expand vocabulary so that students can participate more confidently in discussions about current everyday topics according to their language level at B1-B2 levels. On this discussion course, we will choose a topic, review expressions related to it, and activate them by discussing in small groups and pairs. Participation requires about 3-4 years of active Finnish language study, as the course aims to effectively develop vocabulary based on an already acquired extensive vocabulary. We will meet once a week via Zoom. During our meetings we will study and practice various sentence structures. After each meeting you will get a writing assignment on a current topic. This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is at least a strong B1. You want to become more accurate in your Finnish and want to learn to use more advanced grammar structures. The aim of the course is to learn to understand more demanding grammatical structures (such as participles and temporal constructions) and to gain confidence in using them. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone or headset, and a camera.

The course is suitable for you if you have been actively studying Finnish for several years, can handle various leisure and work-related conversational situations well, and already have a wide vocabulary. On this course, you will listen to short authentic conversations, and read colloquial posts (Facebook, Instagram) as well as text messages. We will explore the rules of colloquial Finnish and practice to better understand and speak it. The course is taught online via Zoom. To participate, you need a computer with internet access, a microphone or headset, and a camera. Note: The course is similar in content as the one held in autumn 2025.

This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is B2. You already understand fast-paced speech in Finnish and can communicate quite fluently in different situations. You want to improve and expand your vocabulary, and learn how to express nuances, attitudes, and details. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. This course is for students whose language proficiency level in Finnish is B2.2/C1. We will focus on vocabulary nuances that suit different language situations, learn less common grammar structures, and look at different text types and how they may influence the reader. You will get a weekly study program including various exercises and one assignment on which you will get feedback from the teacher. You will get all the materials you need by email. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection. The course content is the same as on the corresponding courses in autumn 2025 and spring 2026. There are no real-time online meetings on this course, you can study when it suits you best.

The course is suitable for beginners who want to progress quickly and are able to study independently on a daily basis at least 10 hours a week. The course is also suitable for those who want to revisit the basics of Finnish. We will start learning Finnish from the very beginning. You will receive new material five days a week, which you can study when it suits you best. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone, and speakers. You also need the textbook Suomen mestari 1, of which chapters 1-5 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. Note: The course does not have real-time online meetings; you can study at times that suit you best.
