Autumn term 2021

We organize Finnish courses from beginner’s level A1 to level C1, in four locations as well as online. Our courses are open to everyone, but students need to register for most of the courses. We do not provide language testing, but certificates of attendance are provided on request. If you need a certificate after the course, please contact our customer service: toimisto (at) ahjola.fi.

Registration

Note! The 4 courses for immigrant women held in Naistari are an exception: advance registration for them is at Naistari. For all our other Finnish courses you need to register either online or by phone.

How to register?

• online registration (in Finnish) starts on July 1st, 2021.
• registration by phone at 044 553 8444 between 10 am and 3 pm, on July 1-2 and on weekdays from August 9th, 2021.

If you register by phone, be prepared to give us your email address, to which we will send confirmation of your registration and the payment details for paying your course fee. 

Note that your registration is binding; if you know you can’t attend the course, please cancel your registration at least 8 days before the course begins (free of charge). For cancellations 1-7 days before the beginning of the course we charge a handling fee (15 €). Under exceptional circumstances (e.g. gathering restrictions imposed by the Government) students can cancel their course registration free of charge before the course begins. After the course has started, the whole course fee is charged.

SHORT COURSES IN AUGUST

Finnish for beginners intensively in August (level 0-A1.2) 1201002

An intensive Finnish course for beginners. Course book: Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 or later ed.), ch 1-5. The course meets five times a week and requires also self-study at home between classes. After this course you can continue to the Finnish continuation course starting in September. English may be used alongside Finnish as a language of instruction.

Let’s review Finnish for beginners online (level A1.1-A1.2) 1201051

This course suits you if you have studied some Finnish for beginners. On this course will review the topics of Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 ed.), ch 1-5. The main focus will be on ch 5.The language of instruction is Finnish, English may be used when needed alongside Finnish. The course is be held online via the conference application Zoom. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection and a microphone (or headphones with a microphone). The teacher will contact the participants by email before the course starts and send instructions for the course as well as the Zoom link.

Review Finnish in August (level B1) 1201069

This four-week review course suits you if you have studied e.g. the books Suomen mestari 1 and 2. We practise both written and spoken Finnish on the course. After this course you will listen to spoken Finnish with more confidence and can talk about everyday topics more fluently. You will also be able to read longer texts about current issues. Course material will be provided by the teacher. Note! The contents of the course are partly the same as on our review course held in May. The course is held online via conference application Zoom. To participate you need a computer with a microphone / headphones and a camera. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts.

The book will be completed during the course. After this course you can continue on the course Finnish 3, starting in January.

 A continuation course in Finnish for students who took the Finnish for beginners intensive course in May or August 2021 and for others who have studied some Finnish for beginners. We focus on speaking and listening but practise also reading and writing, and activate the language that has already been learned. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 ed.), ch 6-9. English is used alongside Finnish as a language of instruction when needed.

Finnish 2 at a slower pace (level A1.3-A2.1) 1201025

The course is suitable for students who have taken the course Finnish 1 or have studied the book Suomen mestari 1 or other beginners’ book. The pace of this course is slower than on our course Finnish 2 (1201029), and we use two terms to cover the themes of book Suomen mestari 2. Chapters 1-4 will be covered during the autumn term, and chapters 5-8 in the spring. We will focus on speaking, listening and activating the students’ language skills. English may be used alongside Finnish when necessary. No class on October 18 and 20.

FINNISH COURSES FOR IMMIGRANTS AT NAISTARI AND MATTILA

Easy Finnish for immigrant women (level 0-A1) 1201010

This course is for immigrant women who do not speak any Finnish yet. We study Finnish at a slow pace for everyday needs. After this course you can read and write some words and short sentences, and e.g. ask and answer easy questions. The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. The course is not intended for students who are illiterate in their own language. Registration in Naistari during or before the first lesson.

More Finnish for immigrant women (level A1) 1201011

Finnish continuation course for immigrant women (level A1-A2) 1201012

Finnish for immigrant men (level A1) 1201013

A Finnish course for immigrant men who have learned a little Finnish and want to learn more. After this course you can read and write short texts and manage better in practical everyday situations. The course is organized in co-operation with Mattila, a civic house for all men. The course is funded by Ahjola and Mattila. No class on October 19.

Writing workshop for immigrant women (level A2-B1) 1201015

The course is meant for immigrant girls and women who can speak Finnish and manage in everyday spoken situations or e.g. in vocational training but find writing very hard. We practise skills you need when writing answers to school tests or writing e-mails. We also practise skills needed in the written sections of the YKI language test. We will use the coursebook Kynä käteen! Kirjoitusharjoituksia suomenoppijoille as well as material provided by the teacher. The students need not buy the book. Registration at Naistari during the first lesson. Note! Childcare is not provided on this evening course.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY COURSE

Finnish for beginners intensively in December (level 0-A1.2) 1201003

The course dates are: December 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, 2021 and January 3, 4, and 5, 2022.

Finnish for beginners online (level 0-A1.2) 1201050 THE COURSE IS FULL.

To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone and speakers. A camera is useful but not necessary. You also need the coursebook Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 or later ed.), of which chapters 1-5 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. The teacher will contact you by email prior to the beginning of the course and give instructions about the platform. No instruction during October 18-22. There are no real-time video meetings on the course.

The course suits you if you have studied Finnish at least half a year or e.g. the book Suomen mestari 1. We practise everyday spoken Finnish, e.g. how to ask questions or tell about what you are doing, and learn about how to use Finnish for example in the health centre or in a shop. This course complements courses such as Finnish 1, Finnish 2 or Finnish continuation course. Study material is provided by the teacher. English is used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition. The course will be held via the conference application Zoom. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection and a microphone (or headphones with a microphone). A camera would be good, but not necessary. The teacher will contact the participants by email before the course starts and send further instructions as well as the Zoom link.

The course is for students who have studied the basics of Finnish, e.g. Suomen mestari 1-2, and want to review and practise their Finnish. The course also suits those who have taken the course Elementary Finnish online I earlier. We work on vocabulary, grammar, listening and writing. The course suits you if you want to work independently in your own time. Most of the coursework is done independently following the course instructions. There are also weekly assignments on which you get feedback from the teacher. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection and basic computer skills. There are no real-time video meetings on the course; you can study at any time that suits you best. The teacher will contact the participants by email prior to the beginning of the course.

Finnish online 1 (level A2-B1) 1201061 THE COURSE IS FULL.

The course is designed for students whose language level is at least A2: you have studied Finnish for at least two years and can communicate in Finnish in everyday situations and understand basic texts in Finnish. We focus on writing as well as understanding written and spoken Finnish. The course platform is Peda.net. Part of the course exercises are done independently in Peda.net; once a week you will get feedback from the teacher after handing in a weekly assignment. To participate you need a computer and headphones. The language of tuition is Finnish, but English may be used if necessary for understanding. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts. There are no real-time video meetings on the course; you can study when it suits you best.

Online course for students preparing for the YKI language test A (level A2.2-B1.1) 1201065 THE COURSE IS FULL.

The course is designed for students who are preparing for the YKI language test. We will learn about the structure of the test and practise various skills and language that may be useful in the test. The course is held via conference application Zoom and learning platform Peda.net. The meetings in Zoom are held on Mondays from 7 to 8.30 pm. Written assignments and other activities and materials are given through Peda.net where you can work at your own pace. The course includes assignments that are returned to the teacher for feedback. The course requires approximately 4 hours of study time per week. To participate you need a computer with a microphone. A camera is useful but not necessary. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts.

Would you like to write more fluent texts? The course suits you if you have studied Finnish for at least 2-3 years and want learn to write more accurately. We will meet once a week in the meeting application Zoom. During our meetings we will study and practise various sentence structures. After each meeting you will get a writing assignment on a current topic. The students get personal feedback on the assignments. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone/headphones and a camera. The teacher will contact you prior to the beginning of the course by email. Note: the course content is similar to the one held in spring 2021.

Which Finnish words are different in spoken and written language? What do expressions such as ”kelit kohillaan” or ”ootatko vielä 5 minsaa” mean? On this course we will listen to short, authentic discussions, read Facebook and Instagram posts as well as text messages written in spoken language. We’ll learn about some rules of spoken Finnish and practise understanding and using spoken Finnish better. The course suits you if you have studied Finnish actively for at least 2-3 years and your vocabulary is already wide. Our platform is Zoom; to participate you need a computer with a good internet connection, microphone / headphones and a camera. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts.

The course is also suitable for students who want to prepare for a language test at intermediate level.  The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee. This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is at least a strong B1. You want to become more accurate in your Finnish and want to learn to use more advanced grammar structures. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone / headphones and a camera. This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is B2. You already understand fast speech in Finnish and can communicate quite fluently in different situations. You want to improve and expand your vocabulary as well as learn how to express nuances, attitudes and details. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone / headphones and a camera. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts and give further instructions.

Online Finnish for advanced students 1201080

This course is for students whose language proficiency level in Finnish is B2.2/C1. We focus on vocabulary nuances that suit different language situations, learn less common grammar structures and look at different text types and how they may influence the reader. The course is held completely online; the learning platform used is Peda.net. You will get a weekly learning plan including various exercises and one assignment on which you will get feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection. The teacher will send you an email prior to the beginning of the course with further instructions. The course is similar to the one held during spring term 2021. There are no real-time video meetings on this course; you can study when it suits you best.
