Spring term 2020

We organize Finnish courses from beginner’s level A1 to level C1, in four locations as well as online. Our Finnish courses are open to everyone, but students need to register for most of the courses. We do not provide language testing, but certificates of attendance are provided on request. If you need a certificate after the course, please contact our office: toimisto (at) ahjola.fi.

Registration

Note! The 4 courses for immigrant women held in Naistari are an exception, there is no advance registration for them.

How to register?

• online registration (in Finnish) starts on December 27, 2019 – this is suitable for anyone who has a Finnish ID.
• registration by phone at 044 553 8444 on weekdays between 10 am and 3 pm, from January 2, 2020

If you register by phone, be prepared to give us your email address, to which we will send confirmation of your registration and the payment details for paying your course fee. 

Note that your registration is binding; if you know you can’t attend the course, please cancel your registration at least 8 days before the course begins (free of charge). For cancellations 1-7 days before the beginning of the course we charge a handling fee (15 €). After the course has started, the whole course fee is charged. Cancellations and questions about payments: please contact seija.havonen @ ahjola.fi.

FINNISH COURSES FOR IMMIGRANTS AT NAISTARI AND MATTILA

Easy Finnish for immigrant women (level 0-A1)  1201002K

Mondays and Wednesdays 10.30-12.00 am

No course fee

The course is for immigrant women who do not speak any Finnish yet. We study Finnish at a slow pace for everyday needs. After this course you can read and write some words and short sentences and answer e.g. personal questions. The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. The course is not intended for students who are illiterate in their own language. Registration in Naistari during the first lesson, no advance registration.

More Finnish for immigrant women (level A1)   1201003K

The course is for immigrant women who have studied some Finnish, for example on Naistari’s course. We learn more Finnish for everyday needs. After this course you can read and write short texts, e.g. messages, and talk about concrete topics, e.g. yourself and your family. The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. Registration in Naistari during the first lesson, no advance registration.

Finnish continuation course for immigrant women (level A1-A2)   1201004K

This course is suitable for immigrant women who have studied Finnish at least for a couple of years for example at Naistari. After this course you are able to participate in easy discussions and read and write texts for everyday needs. The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. Registration in Naistari during the first lesson, no advance registration.

Finnish for immigrant men (level A1)   1201006K

A Finnish course for immigrant men who have already learned a little Finnish and want to learn more to survive in practical, everyday situations. After this course you can read and write short texts, e.g. messages, and manage in practical situations such as at a café or in a shop in Finnish. The course is organized in co-operation with Mattila, a civic house for all men. The course is funded by Ahjola.  

Writing workshop for immigrant women (level A2-A1) 1201025L

A new course! The course is meant for immigrant girls and women who can speak Finnish and manage in everyday spoken situations or e.g. in vocational training but find writing very hard. We practise skills you need when writing answers to school test and for written schoolwork, or writing e-mails. We also practise skills needed in the written sections of the YKI language test.  The course material is provided by the teacher. Registration at Naistari during the first lesson, no advance registration. Note! Childcare is not provided on this evening course.

Finnish 1 (level A1)   1201015L

A Finnish course for beginners. After completing this course you can continue to course Finnish 2 in September 2020. The course is fast and requires self-study at home between classes. Course book: Suomen mestari 1, which will be completed during the course. English is used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition. Note! No class on January 15.

Finnish 2 (level A1-A2)     1201016L

This course is for students who have completed the Finnish 1 course or studied Finnish for about half a year elsewhere. The course is fast and requires self-study between classes. English and Russian can be used when needed as languages of tuition. Course book: Suomen mestari 2, from the beginning. The book will be completed during the course. 

Finnish 3 (level A2)     1201018L

A course for students who have completed the Finnish 2 course or have reached level A2 in Finnish. Course book: Oma suomi 2, ch 1-6. The themes are eg. jobseeking in Finnish and verb tenses (the perfect, the past perfect and the passive). The course requires self-study between classes.

A course for students who have completed the course Finnish 3 or who have studied Finnish for a couple of years and want to proceed to language level B1. Course book: Suomen mestari 3, ch 4-8 and supplementary material provided by the teacher. The course requires self-study between classes. 

FINNISH COURSES AT A SLOWER PACE (LEVELS A1-A2)

Finnish for beginners at a slower pace (level A1)   1201007L

A Finnish course for beginners at a slower pace than on Finnish 1 course. We focus on speaking and listening but will practise reading and writing as well, and aim at using Finnish actively from the start. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1 ch 1-5, as well as supplementary material prepared by the teacher. English can be used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition when needed. 

Finnish continuation course in Pispala (level A1)   1201008L

A continuation course in Finnish for students who took the Finnish for beginners course in autumn 2019 and for others who have studied some Finnish for beginners. We focus on speaking and listening but practise reading and writing as well, and activate the language that has already been learned. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1 from ch 6 as well as supplementary material provided by the teacher. English is used alongside Finnish when needed.

Easy Finnish conversation (level A1-A2)  1201017L

This course suits you if you have studied some Finnish, for example half of the book Suomen mestari 1. We practise easy everyday speaking situations. Our topics include talking about yourself, shopping, at a café etc. This course complements other courses such as Finnish 1, Finnish 2 or Finnish continuation course. Study material is provided by the teacher. English is used alongside Finnish when needed as a language of tuition. Note! The course is similar to the course of autumn 2019 and meant for new students.

HIGHER LEVEL COURSES (LEVELS B1-B2)

Review and prepare for the language test YKI (level B1)    1201030L

The course is intended for those preparing for the language test (YKI) and others who want to review B1 level Finnish. We learn about the test and its exercise types, review the most important grammar points and learn how to make one’s texts in Finnish more comprehensible. The course requires self-study at home with the material provided by the teacher.

The course continues from autumn term 2019 and is designed for students who have completed courses Finnish 1-4 or have reached level B1.1 in Finnish and want to strengthen their skills, expand their vocabulary and review grammar. The course is also suitable for students who want to prepare for a language test. Course book: Suomen mestari 4, chapters 5-8, selected parts. In addition to the book, we use supplementary material on current topics.

This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is at least a strong B1. You want to become more accurate in your Finnish and want to learn to use more advanced grammar structures, too. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee.

This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is B2. You already understand fast speech in Finnish and can communicate quite fluently in different situations. You want to improve and expand your vocabulary as well as learn how to express nuances, attitudes and details. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee.

ONLINE COURSES

Elementary Finnish online (level A1)   1201040L

The course is for students who have studied some Finnish for beginners, e.g. Suomen mestari 1, and want to review and further practise the basics of elementary Finnish. We work on vocabulary, grammar, listening and simple writing. The course suits you if you want to work independently in your own time. Most of the coursework is done independently following the course instructions. There will also be a weekly assignment on which you get feedback from the teacher. The languages of instruction are English and Finnish. The course is held completely online; the learning platform used is Peda.net. The teacher will contact the participants by email prior to the beginning of the course. Note! No tuition during week 9 (24.-28.2.).

Finnish online (level A2-B1)   1201041L

The course is designed for students whose language level is at least A2: you have studied Finnish for at least two years and can communicate in Finnish in everyday situations and understand basic texts in Finnish. We focus on writing as well as understanding written and spoken Finnish. The course platform is Peda.net. Part of the course exercises are done independently in Peda.net; once a week you will get feedback from the teacher after handing in a weekly assignment. The course is held completely online, and you can study at the times that suit you best. The language of tuition is Finnish, but English may be used if necessary for understanding. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts. Note: no tuition during week 9 (24.-28.2.).

Online Finnish for advanced students 1201043L

A new course! This course is for students whose language proficiency level in Finnish is B2/C1. We focus on vocabulary nuances that suit different language situations, learn less common grammar structures and look at different text types and how they may influence the reader. The course is held completely online. You will get a weekly learning plan from the teacher, including various excercises and one assignment on which you will get feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection. The teacher will send you an email prior to the beginning of the course with further instructions. Note! No tuition during week 9 (24.-28.2.).

SPRING COURSES

Finnish for beginners in spring (level A1) 1201050L

Let’s speak Finnish! (level A2)   1201052L

Course fee: 41 €

The course suits you if you have studied Finnish for a couple of years, manage in everyday situations and want to practise speaking. We practise speaking using varied activities such as vocabulary tasks, discussions and simulations.
