Spring term 2021

We organize Finnish courses from beginner’s level A1 to level C1, in four locations as well as online. Our Finnish courses are open to everyone, but students need to register for most of the courses. We do not provide language testing, but certificates of attendance are provided on request. If you need a certificate after the course, please contact our office: toimisto (at) ahjola.fi.

Registration

Note! The 4 courses for immigrant women held in Naistari are an exception: advance registration for them is at Naistari. For all our other Finnish courses you need to register online or by phone.

How to register?

• online registration (in Finnish) starts on December 7th, 2020.
• registration by phone at 044 553 8444 between 10 am and 3 pm, Monday – Thursday from December 7th, 2020

If you register by phone, be prepared to give us your email address, to which we will send confirmation of your registration and the payment details for paying your course fee. 

Note that your registration is binding; if you know you can’t attend the course, please cancel your registration at least 8 days before the course begins (free of charge). For cancellations 1-7 days before the beginning of the course we charge a handling fee (15 €). Under exceptional circumstances (e.g. gathering restrictions imposed by the Government) students can cancel their course registration free of charge before the course begins. After the course has started, the whole course fee is charged.

Finnish for beginners online (level 0-A1.2) 1201045L

Course fee: 69 €

This course is for beginners. During the course you will get weekly material that you can study when it suits you best. The online material comprises videos, audios and exercises to train listening comprehension, writing skills and speech. You will get online support and answers to your questions throughout the course. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone and speakers. A camera is useful but not necessary. You also need the coursebook Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 edition), of which chapters 1-5 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. The teacher will contact you by email prior to the beginning of the course and give instructions about the platform. No instruction during March 1-5 and April 5-9. There are no real-time video meetings on the course; you can study at any time that suits you best.

Intensive Finnish for beginners online (level 0-A1.2) 1201046L

The course suits you if you want to work independently. Most of the coursework is done independently following the course instructions. Elementary Finnish online II (level A2.1)   1201052L

The course is for students who have studied the basics of Finnish, e.g. Suomen mestari 1-2, and want to review and practise their Finnish. The course also suits those who have taken the course Elementary Finnish online I earlier. We work on vocabulary, grammar, listening and writing. The course suits you if you want to work independently in your own time. Most of the coursework is done independently following the course instructions. Finnish online 1 (level A2-B1)   1201055L

The course is designed for students whose language level is at least A2: you have studied Finnish for at least two years and can communicate in Finnish in everyday situations and understand basic texts in Finnish. We focus on writing as well as understanding written and spoken Finnish. The course platform is Peda.net. Part of the course exercises are done independently in Peda.net; once a week you will get feedback from the teacher after handing in a weekly assignment. To participate you need a computer and headphones. The language of tuition is Finnish, but English may be used if necessary for understanding. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts. Note! There are no real-time video meetings on the course; you can study when it suits you best. No instruction on March 1-7.

Online course for students preparing for the YKI language test (level A2.2-B1.1)   1201058L

The course is designed for students who are preparing for the YKI language test. We will learn about the structure of the test and practise various skills and language that may be useful in the test. The course topics are e.g. expressing opinions, giving feedback and making appointments. The course is held completely online using the conference application Zoom and learning platform Peda.net. The meetings in Zoom are held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8.30 pm. Written assignments and other activities and materials are given through Peda.net where you can work at your own pace. The course includes assignments that are returned to the teacher for feedback. The course requires approximately 4 hours of study time per week. To participate you need a computer with a microphone. A camera is useful but not necessary. The teacher will contact you by email before the course starts. Note: no tuition on March 1-5.

Online writing course – towards level B2 (level B1.2-B2.1) 1201059L

Would you like to write more fluent texts? The course suits you if you have studied Finnish for at least 2-3 years and want learn to write more accurately. We will meet once a week in the meeting application Zoom. During our meetings we will study and practise various sentence structures. After each meeting you will get a writing assignment on a current topic. The students get personal feedback on the assignments. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone/headphones and a camera. The teacher will contact you prior to the beginning of the course by email. Note: no tuition on March 1-5.

Online Finnish for advanced students 1201060L

This course is for students whose language proficiency level in Finnish is B2.2/C1. We focus on vocabulary nuances that suit different language situations, learn less common grammar structures and look at different text types and how they may influence the reader. The course is held completely online; the learning platform used is Peda.net. You will get a weekly learning plan including various exercises and one assignment on which you will get feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection. The teacher will send you an email prior to the beginning of the course with further instructions. The course is similar to the one held during autumn term 2020. There are no real-time video meetings on this course; you can study when it suits you best. Note: no tuition on March 1-5.

Finnish 2 (level A1.3-A2.1)     1201021L

This course is for students who have completed the Finnish 1 course or studied Finnish for about half a year elsewhere. The course is fast and requires self-study between classes. English and Russian can be used when needed as languages of tuition. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 2, from the beginning. The book will be completed during the course. After this course you can continue on the course Finnish 3, starting in September.

Finnish for beginners in Pispala (level 0-A1.2)   1201011L

A Finnish course for beginners at a slower pace than on Finnish 1 course. We focus on speaking and listening but practise reading and writing as well, and aim at using Finnish actively from the start. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 edition), ch. 1-5. English can be used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition when needed.

A continuation course in Finnish for students who took the Finnish for beginners intensive course in autumn 2020 and for others who have studied some Finnish for beginners. We focus on speaking and listening but practise also reading and writing, and activate the language that has already been learned. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1 (the 2020 edition), from ch 6. English is used alongside Finnish when needed.

This course suits you if you have studied Finnish at least half a year or e.g. the book Suomen mestari 1. We learn useful spoken phrases and about spoken Finnish in general and practise everyday situations such as in a shop/cafe. This course complements courses such as Finnish 1, Finnish 2 or Finnish continuation course. Study material is provided by the teacher. English is used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition.

Finnish 2 at a slower pace (level A1.3-A2.1)  1201014

The course started in September -20. New students are welcome to join in January if they have already studied the first half of the coursebook Suomen mestari 2 or if they have studied Finnish for a couple of years and want to repeat and activate what they have learned. Chapters 5-8 will be covered during the spring term. The pace of this course is slower than in course Finnish 2; we use 2 terms to cover the themes of the book Suomen mestari 2. We aim at using as much Finnish as possible but English may be used alongside Finnish when necessary.

The course started in September -20 and is designed for students who have completed courses Finnish 1-4 or have reached level B1.1 in Finnish and want to strengthen their skills, expand their vocabulary, review grammar and practise discussing various topics. This course started in September -20 and is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is at least a strong B1. You want to become more accurate in your Finnish and want to learn to use more advanced grammar structures, too. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee.

This course started in September -20 and is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is B2. You already understand fast speech in Finnish and can communicate quite fluently in different situations. You want to improve and expand your vocabulary as well as learn how to express nuances, attitudes and details. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. The course material is provided by the teacher and is included in the course fee.

FINNISH COURSES FOR IMMIGRANTS AT NAISTARI AND MATTILA

Easy Finnish for immigrant women (level 0-A1)  1201005

The course started in September -20 and is for immigrant women who do not speak any Finnish yet. We study Finnish at a slow pace for everyday needs. After this course you can read and write some words and short sentences and answer e.g. personal questions. The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. The course is not intended for students who are illiterate in their own language. Registration in Naistari during or before the first lesson.

More Finnish for immigrant women (level A1)   1201006

The course started in September -20 and is for immigrant women who have studied some Finnish, for example on Naistari’s course. We learn more Finnish for everyday needs. The course is mainly intended for students who cannot attend our evening courses. Registration in Naistari during or before the first lesson.

Finnish continuation course for immigrant women (level A1-A2)   1201007

Finnish for immigrant men (level A1)   1201008

A Finnish course for immigrant men who have learned a little Finnish and want to learn more. After this course you can read and write short texts and manage in practical situations such as shopping, at a café etc. The course is organized in co-operation with Mattila, a civic house for all men. The course is funded by Ahjola and Mattila.

Writing workshop for immigrant women (level A2-B1) 1201009

The course started in September -20 and is meant for immigrant girls and women who can speak Finnish and manage in everyday spoken situations or e.g. in vocational training but find writing very hard. We practise skills you need when writing answers to school test and for written schoolwork, or writing e-mails. We also practise skills needed in the written sections of the YKI language test.  The course material is provided by the teacher. Registration at Naistari during the first lesson. Note! Childcare is not provided on this evening course.

SUMMER COURSES

Finnish for beginners intensively in May (level 0-A1.2) 1201048L

An intensive Finnish course for beginners. Course book: Suomen mestari 1, the 2020 edition, ch 1-5. The course meets three times a week and requires also self-study at home between classes. After this course you can continue to the Finnish continuation course starting in September. English may be used alongside Finnish as a language of tuition.

Let’s speak Finnish! (level A2) 1201049L

5.5.-9.6.2021 (18 hours)
Course fee: 43 €

This course suits you if you have studied Finnish for a couple of years, manage in everyday situations and want to practise speaking. The course topics include talking about one’s own interests, expressing opinions and other real life situations. The language of instruction is Finnish, English may be used when needed alongside Finnish.

Review Finnish in the spring (level B1) 12201050L

Course fee: 50 €

This six-week review course suits you if you have studied e.g. books Suomen mestari 1 and 2 and know the following structures: the simple past tense, the perfect, the plural with ”t” and the plural partitive, the conditional and the object form. On this course we practise e.g. verb forms in past tenses, types of nominals, verbs in their active and passive forms, expressions of time and different clause types as well as forming new words. After this course you will also listen to spoken Finnish with more confidence and can talk about everyday topics with more fluency. You will also be able to read longer texts about current issues. Course material will be provided by the teacher. Note: on the 3rd, 10th and 17th of May the course will meet in classroom Ateljee.
