Finnish courses in Tampere – Suomen kielen kurssit Tampereella

Welcome to study Finnish language with us! We offer various Finnish courses for different skill levels, both onsite in different locations around the city and online. Below you will find information about upcoming courses and registration.

This spring we offer 40 Finnish courses to choose from. In the list below, you’ll find our onsite courses first, followed by our online courses.

We organize Finnish courses from beginner’s level A1 to level C1, in four locations as well as online. Our courses are open to everyone, but students need to register in advance for most of the courses. We do not provide language testing, but certificates of attendance are provided on request. Registration 

Note!  You must register for most of our Finnish courses in advance, either online or by phone. Course 22008 Finnish for Immigrant Men is an exception: registration for that course takes place at Mattila.  

How to register? 

• Online registration starts on December 8th, 2025 for most of the courses.
• Registration by phone at  044 553 8400 from Monday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm.

If you register by phone, be prepared to give us your email address, to which we will send confirmation of your registration and the payment details for paying the course fee.  
 
Note that your registration is binding; if you know you can’t attend the course, cancel your registration at least 8 days before the course begins (free of charge). For cancellations 1-7 days before the beginning of the course we charge the whole course fee.

The course is intended for beginners who do not yet know Finnish, and those revisiting the basics. We speak and listen a lot, and also practice reading and writing. We aim for active use of the Finnish language from the beginning. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1, chapters 1-5. The language of instruction for the course is Finnish, but English may be used as a supplementary language of instruction as needed. Note: The course is not intended for those who are illiterate in their native language.

Finnish Continuation Course at a Slower Pace (level A1)22012L

This course is designed as a continuation of the autumn 2025 course Finnish for Beginners at as Slower Pace. New students are also welcome! The course is suitable for you if you already know a little Finnish – for example, if you have studied a few chapters of any beginner’s textbook. The course progresses at a slower pace than the afternoon course Finnish Continuation Course in Pispala. We will speak and listen a lot, and we will also practise reading and writing. Textbook: Ahaa! 1, chapters 6–11. The language of instruction is Finnish.

The course is suitable for you if you have participated in Ahjola’s Finnish for beginners course. It also suits others who have studied basic Finnish with the book Suomen mestari 1 chapters 1-5 or with other materials.  We will focus on speaking and listening but also practice reading and writing. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 1, chapters 6-9. The language of instruction is Finnish, but English will be used as a supplementary language of instruction if needed.

The coursebook used is Suomen mestari 2, chapters 1-4. The course topics include e.g. leisure time and travel, nature, and health. The goal is for students to be able to use Finnish in their everyday lives by making use of their vocabulary and the structures they have learned. The language of instruction for the course is Finnish, but English and Russian may be used as auxiliary languages for teaching when necessary.

The course is intended for students who have taken Ahjola’s Finnish 2 course or have studied the equivalent subjects elsewhere. Textbook: Suomen mestari 3, chapters 1-4. If needed, we will review some topics from the Suomen mestari 2 book at the beginning of the course, such as the imperfect and perfect tenses. The course vocabulary relates, among other things, to history, culture, and environmental protection. Grammar topics include e.g. the conditional and passive.

The course is intended for students who have taken Ahjola’s Finnish 3 course or studied the same content elsewhere. We will learn, among other things, new grammatical cases and get acquainted with the features of spoken language. The central theme of the course is life in Finland and its cultural characteristics. Coursebook: Suomen mestari 3, chapters 5-8. At the beginning, we will review the early parts of the book as needed.

This course started in September 2025. The course continues in January from chapter 3 of the book Suomen mestari 4. New students studying or revising Finnish at level B1 are welcome to join the course in January. The course is suitable for you if you can already manage in Finnish in daily life and recurring work situations and wish to learn more. The course reinforces B1-level language skills: vocabulary is expanded, grammar is deepened, listening skills as well as discussions are practiced.

FINNISH COURSES FOR IMMIGRANTS AT NAISTARI AND MATTILA

Easy Finnish for Immigrant Women (level A1)22005

This course is for immigrant women who do not speak any Finnish yet, or understand a little Finnish. After this course you will know, for instance, greetings, weekdays, and seasons in Finnish.  The course material is provided by the teacher. The course is not intended for students who are illiterate in their own language. You must register for the course in advance. Course registration for spring term 2026 starts online on December 8th.

Plain Finnish for Immigrant Women (level A2) 22006

We learn more Finnish for everyday needs, in various situations such as visiting acquaintances, going to the doctor, shopping, going to the bank. The course material is provided by the teacher. Everyday Finnish for Immigrant Women (level B1) 22007

Finnish for Immigrant Men (level A1.3-A2.1)  22008

The course is intended for immigrant men who already know a little Finnish and want to practice speaking. You have studied for at least one year, either on a course or independently. We will practice various spoken situations and communication in Finnish, emphasizing language skills needed in everyday life.  The course is organized in co-operation with Men’s Civic House Mattila. Registration takes place at Mattila before or during the first lesson.

Finnish Language and Culture through Music (level A1.2-A2) 22055L

This course is suitable for you if you have studied Finnish for at least about a year (e.g. Suomen mestari 1 book). We will practice speaking, listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary in Finnish with the help of various songs and rhythm exercises. At the same time, we will also revise a little grammar. The themes of the course are: nature, celebrations, sauna, and Finland. The aim is to gain confidence in using the Finnish language, to expand vocabulary, as well as to familiarize with the Finnish song tradition and culture. Materials for the course will be shared with participants on the Peda.net platform. The language of instruction of the course is Finnish, but English is used as a supplementary language when needed.

Finnish Language Activation Course in May 1 (level A1) 22060L

The aim of the course is to strengthen your speaking skills, with topics such as history, society, and the environment. During the course, we will review the themes of chapters 1–4 in Suomen mestari 3 book through discussions, focusing on speaking and activating vocabulary. We will also revise and practise some grammar topics. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Everyday Finnish Course for Spring 1 (level A2) 22065L

English and Russian are used as auxiliary languages for teaching if needed.

Everyday Finnish Course for Spring 2 (level B1) 22066L

The course is intended for individuals who have studied Finnish for a few years. The course is suitable for you if you have studied, for example, the book Suomen mestari 3 entirely or halfway through.  On this course, we will activate and maintain Finnish speaking and listening skills related to everyday life topics. We will also expand vocabulary, and refine grammar structures. The textbook of the course is Elämänmenoa. We will cover texts 18-34 from the book. The language of instruction is Finnish.

ONLINE COURSES STARTING IN JANUARY – MARCH

Finnish for Beginners Online (level 0-A1.2)  22107L

This course is for beginners. We will start learning Finnish from scratch with a focus on words and phrases needed in everyday life as well as basic grammar. The course includes 20 modules, each consisting of teaching videos, audios, and various exercises to train listening comprehension, writing skills, and speech. You will get two modules each week on Tuesdays. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English.  To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone, and speakers. You also need the coursebook Suomen mestari 1, of which chapters 1-5 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. There are no real time video meetings on this course, but there is a weekly timetable for interactive exercises that students can participate in on the course platform.

To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone or headset, and a camera. Both students who attended the corresponding course in autumn 2025 and new students are welcome to join the course!

YKIä kohti – YKI training on Zoom (level A2.2-B1.1)  22114L

The course is intended for Finnish students who are preparing for the intermediate level YKI test and want to practice for the test. The course is suitable for you if you have studied Finnish for at least two years or are otherwise currently at A2.2-B1.1 level. To participate in the course, you need a computer with internet access, a microphone or headset, a camera, and the textbook YKIä kohti. The teacher will contact participants via email before the course starts and provide detailed instructions for the course. Please note: On the start date of the course, January 14th, only a 15-minute initial test will be held on Zoom. The initial test will determine if the course is suitable for you. 

Prepare for the Finnish YKI Test Online at your Own Pace (level A2.2-B1.1)  22116L

The course is designed for those who want to prepare for the Finnish language YKI test, intermediate level, and practice the language skills required in it. In this course you study independently at your own pace, while the teacher is available during the study periods at the Peda.net platform forum. The course contains one real-time online Zoom meeting – however, you can participate in the course even if you cannot make it to the online meeting. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / a mobile device, a microphone, and speakers. The teacher will contact you by email before the start of the course with detailed sign-in instructions.

Do you, too, feel that there are far too few opportunities to speak, discuss, and practice Finnish oral skills? On this discussion course, we will choose a topic, review expressions related to it, and activate them by discussing in small groups and pairs. Participation requires about 3-4 years of active Finnish language study, as the course aims to effectively develop vocabulary based on an already acquired extensive vocabulary. The course is held online via Zoom. To participate, you need a computer with internet access, a microphone or headset, and a camera. Note: This course is identical to the corresponding course held in autumn 2025.

Would you like to write texts with more fluent Finnish? This course is suitable for you if you have studied Finnish actively for at least 2-3 years and want to learn to write with more precision. We will meet once a week via Zoom. During our meetings we will study and practice various sentence structures. After each meeting you will get a writing assignment on a current topic. The students get personal feedback on the assignments. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone or headset, and a camera. Note: This course is identical to the corresponding course in autumn 2025.

The course is suitable for you if you have been actively studying Finnish for several years, can handle various leisure and work-related conversational situations well, and already have a wide vocabulary. On this course, you will listen to short authentic conversations, and read colloquial posts (Facebook, Instagram) as well as text messages. We will explore the rules of colloquial Finnish and practice to better understand and speak it. The course is held online, using Zoom. To participate, you need a computer with internet access, a microphone or headset, and a camera. Note: The course is similar in content to the one held in autumn 2025.

New students can join for spring 2026 if there are places available. This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is at least a strong B1. You want to become more accurate in your Finnish and want to learn to use more advanced grammar structures. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone or headset, and a camera.

New students can join for spring 2026 if there are places available. This course is for students who have studied Finnish for several years and whose estimated language proficiency level is B2. You already understand fast speech in Finnish and can communicate quite fluently in different situations. You want to improve and expand your vocabulary, and learn how to express nuances, attitudes, and details. The focus of the course is on speaking and reading, but the students also have the opportunity to hand in writing assignments for feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection, a microphone or headset, and a camera.

This course is for students whose language proficiency level in Finnish is B2.2/C1. We will focus on vocabulary nuances that suit different language situations, learn less common grammar structures, and look at different text types and how they may influence the reader. The learning platform used on the course is Peda.net. You will get a weekly learning plan including various exercises and one assignment on which you will get feedback from the teacher. To participate you need a computer with an internet connection. The course content is the same as on the corresponding course in autumn 2025. There are no real-time online meetings on this course, you can study when it suits you best.

Online Finnish for Beginners – Intensively in April (level 0-A1.2) 22150L

The course is suitable for beginners who want to progress quickly and are able to study independently on a daily basis at least 10 hours a week. The course is also suitable for those who want to revisit the basics of Finnish. We will start learning Finnish from the very beginning. You will receive new material five days a week, which you can study when it suits you best. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone, and speakers. You also need the textbook Suomen mestari 1, of which chapters 1-5 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. Note: The course does not have real-time online meetings; you can study at times that suit you best.

Finnish Continuation Course Online in April (level A1.2-A1.3)  22109L

This course is planned for those who took the Ahjola course 22107L Finnish for Beginners Online, and others who have already studied some Finnish (for example, Suomen mestari 1 chapters 1-5). The course includes 20 modules, each consisting of teaching videos, audios and various exercises to train listening comprehension, writing skills and speech. You will get two modules each Tuesday. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone, and speakers.  You also need the coursebook Suomen mestari 1, of which chapters 6-9 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net. There are no real time video meetings on this course, but there is a weekly timetable for interactive exercises that students can participate in on the course platform.

The course is suitable for students who have studied Finnish for about a year and want to revise what they have learned. The course suits also those who have studied chapters 1-5 of the textbook Suomen mestari 1, want to progress quickly, and are able to study independently on a daily basis. We focus on everyday language use situations and basic grammar. You will receive new material five times a week, which you can study when it suits you best. You will get online support and answers to your questions throughout the course. The languages of instruction are Finnish and English. To participate you need a computer / mobile device, a microphone, and speakers.  You also need the coursebook Suomen mestari 1, of which chapters 6-9 will be covered. The learning platform is Peda.net.

Review your Finnish Online in Spring (level B1) 22155L

This revision course is suitable for you if you have studied, for example, the textbooks Suomen mestari 1-3, and are already familiar with topics such as the imperfect and perfect tenses, the plural partitive, and the conditional. In this course, you will practise both written and spoken Finnish in a variety of everyday situations. Grammar topics include the object, active and passive verb forms, expressions of time, and verb rections. The course will be held entirely online using the Zoom video conferencing platform. To participate, you need a computer with internet access, a microphone or headset, and a camera.
